I’m hooked, I admit it.

This morning I shocked myself. There was a Facebook Group discussion I spotted where we were jokingly asked by one of the members – “What are some of the things that high performing women do NOT do?”.

I replied, “Waste hours of time every day on Facebook, I really must get my addiction under control.”

But what shocked me was when I realised I had just posted this comment WHILE ON THE TOILET!!!

Waaaaay too much information, I know, but really, what had my world come to?

So much for ‘being present’, so much for ‘one thing at a time’. So much for simplicity.

This has to stop. TODAY.

So here’s what I’m doing to simplify my love of social media and  hanging out in cyber space far too much – please do share if you think this post will help you or any of your friends. Just use the Facebook ‘like’ button below ha ha.

I tried to make it as simple as possible: Ten Steps To Freedom!

Go to https://www.rescuetime.com/ and click ‘get started’. Choose the premium version – you get 14 days free so this should be long enough to break the worst of the habit ($6 a month after if you buy the annual plan and I’m going to be sharing waaaay more cool simplicity tips using this in the future so you might want to keep it)

Once you’re in, click Tools on the upper right of your Dashboard, then ‘CATEGORIZE ACTIVITIES’

[fancylist][fancyitem title=”STEP THREE” icon=”icon-heart” list_swatch=”swatch-coral” icon_animation=”bounce”][/fancyitem][/fancylist]

Click on ‘Manage Categories’.

Then scroll down to find ‘Facebook’. Click here to set this to ‘very distracting’.

Now go back to your Dashboard and click Tools, then ‘GOALS & ALERTS’

[fancylist][fancyitem title=”STEP SIX” icon=”icon-heart” list_swatch=”swatch-coral” icon_animation=”bounce”][/fancyitem][/fancylist]

Click ‘Alerts and Notifications’, then ‘Create a new alert’

I’m going to use Facebook in this example, but you can do whatever you like! Here I’ve selected to be alerted after 1 hour is spent on Facebook. Then click the unobtrusive (because it’s still in beta) ‘Alert Actions’ to the left.

This is the magical part. Add a custom message that pops up when you’ve maxed out on your self-imposed limit. And then can you see I’ve set it so it stops letting me access ‘very distracting’ sites for the whole rest of the day! One hour of Facebook a day. That’s plenty for me to post my blogs, check up on my Facebook groups and scan my news feed for cute kitten movies etc.

[fancylist][fancyitem title=”STEP NINE” icon=”icon-heart” list_swatch=”swatch-coral” icon_animation=”bounce”][/fancyitem][/fancylist]

Get on with what you’re supposed to be doing!

[fancylist][fancyitem title=”STEP TEN” icon=”icon-heart” list_swatch=”swatch-coral” icon_animation=”bounce”][/fancyitem][/fancylist]

Delete the Facebook App from your phone. Really. You don’t need to post on the toilet.

Please share so that other Facebook Addicts may see this post while they’re hopelessly scanning through their newsfeeds knowing there are more important things to be doing with their day!

And  let me know – are you hooked? How do you manage any social media distractions, I’d love to know.
